Study Permit to Study in Canada
Are you looking to study in Canada? Find out where to start.
Canada is renowned globally for its excellent education system and institutions. Aspiring international students looking to benefit from a quality education in Canada are required to apply for a Study Permit before embarking on their educational journey in the country.
Study Permit Overview
A study permit is a credential issued by IRCC enabling foreign nationals to pursue studies at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. For most foreign nationals, obtaining a study permit is a prerequisite for studying in Canada.
Eligibility for a Study Permit
- A valid letter of acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
- Sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation.
- Absence of a criminal record (a police certificate might be requested).
- A medical examination may be required, especially for long-term studies.
- Intention to leave Canada upon the expiry of the Study Permit.
Duration and Extensions
A Study Permit typically lasts for the length of the study program, plus an additional 90 days. This extra time allows students to prepare to leave Canada or apply for an extension. If one's program ends sooner than expected or gets extended, the permit’s status may need an update.
Working While Studying
With a valid Study Permit, students can work up to 20 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during breaks, like the summer or winter holidays, without requiring an additional work permit.
Post-Graduation Opportunities
Canada values its international graduates. The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows students to work in Canada after completing their studies. Depending on the length of the study program, this work permit can be valid for up to three years.
Bringing Family
Canada understands the importance of family. Students with a valid Study Permit can bring their family members with them. While the student is studying, their spouse or common-law partner is eligible for an open work permit, and their dependent children can attend primary or secondary school.

Renewing or Changing a Study Permit
It's crucial for students to maintain their status in Canada. If a student wishes to extend their stay, they should apply for a renewal at least 30 days before the current permit expires. If planning to change the conditions of the study, like shifting from part-time to full-time, it's essential to apply for a change in conditions.
